A brief peek into the past :)

I was so interested in robotics when I was in my Bachelors. Created a team with 3 friends. “Carriers” we were called. We participated in so many competitions , unfortunately I have lost most of the photos and videos.

Recently while talking to a colleague who is a mechatronics engineer I remembered one day I wanted to me him. So, I did a bit of time travel into the past , thought about the old websites I used 10 years back, and Voila!! found Dropbox to my rescue!

Here is the trial round video of a robotics competition that we finally won. I know it’s hard to believe considering how inaccurate this Robot is right? Surprisingly we managed to make it super accurate as we progressed through the rounds.

All using frugal Indian innovation. We used plastic bottles, thrown away packagings, used switches etc. The whole cost would have been just a few euro cents.


Oh, I didn’t even talk about our special mechanism. How do you make a robot pick up balls and throw? How can you build a hand? No, you can’t use 3D printer etc.

  • Cut a plastic ball into two halves, attach a motor to use as hand?
  • Attach two spoons at the end of a scissor mechanism and use a linear motion?

All these hand mechanisms look cool but they are limited to mechanical design and precision. We just used a water bottle and cut it’s base. Then we attached an elastic band to the open mouth like a cross.

Screen Shot 2017-05-19 at 3.24.52 PM.png If you press against a ball with this, the ball will enter, by expanding the band but cannot leave as it’s weight is not enough to expand the band.

Visualisation of 100 best movies

Recently in 2016 BBC published a list of 100 best movies. Critics from different parts of the world were asked to rank their top 10 movies. Based on these votes they came up with a final rank of 100 top movies.

How would you visualise this data? Would you just display the top 100 movies? Well, that’s the most important and simplified visualisation for this dataset. However if you just do so, you loose lots of information like which movie was voted the maximum time in position 2 etc. How many critics were there and from which country?

I had to solve this visualisation problem as part of my course Information Visualisation and this is what I came up with. https://aveekdeveloper.github.io/visualisationOfBBCtop100Movies/index.html

The cleanest visualisation is presented in Overview. If you want to dig deeper you must use the “Detailed view”. In this you can sort by all the columns and even group by multiple ranks, in any order as you like. Lastly you can use the “Map View” to get details about critics from different parts of the world. Persuasive design of a Hiking App

This work was done as part of our course on Persuasive Technology. What is a good user experience? Is it just UI?

Actually, a lot more than that. Now can you design a product to persuade the user to do something? We explored just that in this subject. We studied behaviour design and the theories about that.

We designed the persuasive version of Mhikes application focussing only on the topic of “Context and interaction”.

For this work we mostly concentrated on Persuasive design model by Harri Oinas Kukkonen.

Resolution of touch in Shape changing display

This study was conducted as part of course on Human Computer Interaction. We were just getting introduced to how HCI research is done in real world.

For this work we created pin based shapes using Laser cutter at different resolutions and we asked users to feel the shapes by touching. We digitalised the touch responses and tried to conclude on the touch sensitivity of the set of our users.

This study is useful for contexts where we are trying to add tactile feedback to touch devices. Example a work from MIT based on haptic touch display.
